Celebrate the invaluable work of nurses with National Nurses Week, and if you’re a nurse, reward yourself for your hard work.

Efforts to designate a day in America recognizing nurses go as far back as the early 1950s, though it was President Ronald Regan who signed a proclamation making May 6, 1982, National Recognition Day for Nurses, according to the American Nurses Association.

Eight years later, the nurses association expanded the day of recognition into a weeklong event, and several decades later, the observance continues.

When is National Nurses Week?

The weeklong observation begins May 6 and continues through May 12 every year.
